Telescope
home | telescopes | observing | links | for sale | contact me tips for the "department store" telescope owner introduction if you have purchased a "department store telescope", you may have noticed that the eyepieces are a rather inconspicuous part of the telescope. you will also notice that the higher power eyepiece has little eye relief, causing the observer to uncomfortably squint through a small eyepiece opening to see objects. if you manage to look through the eyepiece, it will seem as if you are looking through a narrow tunnel. that is because the apparent field of view of the eyepiece is small. you will also notice that the telescope is rather cumbersome to setup and take down. and finally, when it comes to viewing the sky, the moon may be the only object you can recognize and locate. unfamiliarity with the sky, poor finderscope, poor eyepieces, inadequate (shaky) mounting and clumsy setup takedown, are the 5 evils that will send your telescope into the closet forever. to rectify these problems and to get good use out of your telescope, read on. for purposes of illustration, let’s say you purchased the ever popular, "233 power telescope". if you purchased the telescope because of the 233 power (magnification), you are not alone. it is the oldest sales trick in the book. what you really purchased is a telescope with a 60mm objective lens and a 700mm focal length. a telescope of this size will not perform well past 120 power. this will be covered later. for now, lets solve each problem one step at a time. i chose the 60mm 700mm telescope as an example because on was available to perform a "make over" on.

How to Build a Telescope
how to build a telescope g. carboni, march 1996 english version revised by david p. adam contents introduction the first telescope how to use the first telescope the telescope support lens aberrations eyepieces producing an upright image an achromatic telescope resolving power and magnification power observations at the telescope introduction i describe below how to construct two telescopes. the first one is simpler to build, but is important for understanding the solutions adopted in the second one, which is perfected and optimized for astronomical observations. the first telescope as i said, you can build this first simple instrument without difficulty while allowing you to learn the structure and operation of telescopes in general. although it is simple, it can reveal the craters of the moon and the satellites of jupiter. it is also very useful for demonstrating lens aberrations. you really need to build this telescope as a necessary step towards understanding the solutions employed in the second and improved telescope model. in the section "from lenses to optical instruments", you saw how a telescope works; here i simply remind you that the objective lens produces an image of the object observed, and this image is magnified by the eyepiece. figure 1 shows our first telescope, which is made using easy - to - find materials. the components of this instruments are: ring to secure the eyepiece lens from behind ring for centering the eyepiece lens eyepiece: lens with focal length of 20 - 50 mm. you can buy one in an optical or photographic shop, or you can get one free by using the lens of a disposable camera. ring to secure the eyepiece lens from the front a cardboard tube for the eyepiece. you can use the tube from a roll of plastic food wrap or pap
