from human zoos to colonial apotheoses: the era of exhibiting the other by pascal blanchard, nicolas bancel, and sandrine lemaire it is important to analyse how the other was viewed in the colonial era if we are to understand the prejudices still at work today. human zoos offer one very good example. many aspects of colonial history remain inaudible today. they are impossible to accept in a country that is only just beginning to face this traumatic past. france\'s extreme difficulty in addressing its colonial history probably results from several factors which need to be analysed. first of all, the healing that comes with time - the famous "grieving process" that usually takes one or two generations - has barely begun.2 secondly, colonial history challenges many of the social imagination\'s identity markers. it is this challenge that poses a problem because it means that these same markers have to be (re)constituted, (re)formulated. this simultaneously requires a rewriting of history to make the inclusion of colonial memory compatible with the social imagination. this process also requires that the context - the reasons for colonisation - be revisited. human zoos and their continuum, or at least the analysis of them, are part of this process. the memory of colonisation and of phenomena like the human zoos also has very real, direct effects on france\'s postcolonial history. at the start of the new century, economic crisis, the settling of part of the immigrant population, the tensing of the republican model of integration, the rise of ultra - nationalism (or fanaticism), and the rejection of african (or north african) immigration have, in the context of a colonial history with w

zoos "do you approve of zoo\'s - and what are your reasons for your opinions?" the subject of the rights or wrongs of zoos has now become almost as emotive (and, in some cases, hysterical) as vivisection and hunting, with many very unbalanced views being put forward by people who have little real knowledge of zoos and their aims - but rather allow the imagination to rule their thinking. i believe that a good zoo can be of tremendous value to the cause of conservation and education. equally, i am aware that some zoos exist purely as a kind of \'freak show\' where animals, often badly housed and cared for, are exploited by their owners and degraded by members of the public who seem to find many of the actions of the animals similar to their own! a zoo which exploits its collection solely for the purpose of making money or \'amusing\' the public should be closed immediately and without option. many zoos are now actively involved in breeding and study programmes which may well help to prevent the extinction of some rare species from the wild. the excellent intention of these zoos to release zoo bred rarities back into the wild has not proved particularly successful as yet, but i believe that this aspect needs further research and study. so, the short answer to this question is that i fully support zoos which aim to educate the public, carry out programmes of practical scientific research - and, of course, provide

parcs à loups, parcs animaliers et zoos a euroloup, nous pensons qu'il faut absolument mettre en oeuvre un maximum de moyens de communication (rencontres, contacts, études, médias etc...) afin de sensibiliser et éduquer adultes et enfants, sur les moeurs authentiques des loups. il faut accél&eacut e;rer la compréhensi on, la réhabilitat ion, la réinsertion et la protection de canis lupus. la méconnaissa nce est un facteur de rejet et se mue trop souvent en haine. nous sommes d'accord pour cela, mais, pas à n'importe quel prix ! et surtout pas au détriment du loup. il n'est guère facile de faire évoluer les mentalités. en ce qui concerne la captivité, seule alternative qu'offrent les zoos, réduite à quelques mètres carrés de sol bétonn&eacu te; enclos de grillages, la plupart des gens la considèrent comme normale. elle leur permet de voir de près des animaux dont le comportement est loin d'être naturel, ayant perdu leur liberté. ainsi les loups de ces zoos, paient un lourd tribut de troubles organiques, fonctionnels et psychosensoriels à seule fin de satisfaire la curiosité "rapproch&eac ute;e" de nos congén&egra ve;res. en détention, les loups souffrent de mutations morphologiques irréversibl es, telles que la réduction de la taille, l'affaiblissement des forces, l'apparition et l'aggravation des maladies de peaux. privés de toute initiative psychique et physique, ils ne tardent pas à présenter une forte diminution du volume céré bral. un zoo, comme d'ailleurs un delphinarium, ne sont pas des en
